2024 Yamaha Sidewinder L-TX GT EPS: Best Trail Performance Snowmobile

2024 Yamaha Sidewinder L-TX GT EPS

The Yamaha Sidewinder L-TX GT EPS has earned a reputation among experienced riders with high mileage due to its rugged performance and practical comfort.

The addition of Yamaha’s Variable Electric Power Steering (EPS) rewrites the best trail performance snowmobile definition.

EPS takes the resistance from deploying powerful turbos through a winding road—but it doesn’t stop there.

EPS also isolates the Rider from unwanted handlebar resistance fed back through the mechanical steering system from inconsistencies on the road.

Regarding long days in the saddle, the resulting light steering effort and handling precision are unmatched.

Suspension comfort, responsive throttle, and reliable power are at the top of the priority list for long-distance travel.

Yamaha introduced EPS for snowmobiles in 2011, spearheading innovative technology that reduces steering effort and improves steering precision.

The latest generation has reduced weight by more than three pounds and incorporates ‘brushless’ DC motors.

No worn brushes mean excellent reliability and better thermal performance or the ability to maintain full output power for longer.

Variable assist EPS uses magnetic torque sensors to measure steering inputs based on the steering pole’s torque or ‘twist’ resulting from the handlebar inputs combined with ski resistance.

The contactless magnetic torque sensor supplies this data to an integrated control module which, in turn, signals to the brushless servo motor to assist steering through the powerful worm gear drive unit.

The system also provides engine RPM and vehicle speed data to a calibrated control module for enhanced assistance at lower speeds, then reduced as the vehicle accelerates, providing a more balanced, natural, or ‘connection’ feel to the terrain.

When the ski encounters a sudden force acting against the steering input, the torque sensor tells the control module to apply additional assistance to counter or ‘reject’ the negative information.

This effectively reduces the steering effort required while increasing predictability for greater rider confidence and reduced fatigue.

GT Series Wind Deflectors

The medium-smoked polycarbonate windshield protects high-mileage riders from the coldest days.

The windshield incorporates a small lip at the top to deflect wind and snow up and up the Rider at speed, while the widened edges provide additional protection and warmth for the Rider’s hands.

The GT windshield is also designed to accommodate optional mirrors. The windscreen is thicker than the standard windshield to reduce mirror vibration at speed and features pre-marked indentations to install accessory mirrors easily.

Stryke’ Single Keel Ski

Yamaha-designed single keel, combined with the EPS system, strikes an elusive balance between lightweight steering effort and precise handling in various snow conditions.

The unique staggered carbide further enhances the steering response. A special shim-bearing assembly for EPS works with a rubber saddle block to adjust the pressure point of the carbide.

The overall ski position can also be adjusted by moving the thick spacers on each ski axle to the opposite side.

The GT windshield is also designed to accommodate optional mirrors. The windscreen is thicker than the standard windshield to quickly reduce mirror vibration and features pre-marked grooves for easy installation of the accessory mirror.

A convenient heated protective DC RCA outlet is accompanied by a DC socket force plug to simultaneously turn the device on or charge.

Standard heated seats provide the highest warmth and comfort even on the coldest cold winter days. The simple flip of the dash-mounted switch allows for the choice of two warmth settings, allowing the Rider to explore what’s behind the next curve from sunrise to sunset in complete comfort.

Fully featured and easy to read, the digital meter displays essential information at a glance, including speed, fuel level, travel mileage, notch, altitude, temperature, and more. Changing functions is easy with the toggle control on the left handlebar.

Convenient handlebar positioning makes starting, moving to, and rewinding easy with just a thumb press. The servo motor shifts the drivetrain into reverse consistently.

A convenient tunnel bag provides additional storage. The semi-rigid design is easily accessible and waterproof to keep parts safe and dry. A quarter-turn quick-release fastener is provided for easy removal.

2024 Yamaha Sidewinder L-TX GT EPS Performance

The nickel alloy turbine’s body is solid and precise, able to withstand very high temperatures. Powered by premium ceramic ball bearings, Inconel’s turbine blade assembly is extraordinarily light and strong.

This results in a moment of low inertia for lightning-fast response to exhaust gas inputs. The three throttle bodies are used exclusively to further enhance the rapid delivery of compressed air from the impeller to the intake valve.

Using predefined memory maps, Yamaha-developed Mitsubishi ECUs use nine sensors to collect running condition data.

It then adjusts ignition time, fuel delivery, manifold air pressure, and turbo boost pressure to deliver maximum performance under any conditions—reliably.

The engine coolant is circulated through a turbocharger to control the temperature under the hood and help cool the incoming charge.

When the engine is turned off, the convection energy generated by the superheated coolant in the turbo head keeps it circulating without the coolant pump operating. This eliminates the need for engine cooling cycles while maintaining high durability on turbo components.

The primary and secondary couplings of the YSRC rollers are calibrated for long-lasting and cold operation.

They utilize and efficiently transfer the ample torque generated by the Genesis Turbo to the track while minimizing drive belt wear.

The primary shifts out aggressively to use all the power on the beat. The secondary roller quickly shifts backward and provides an additional ratio through a sheave beam too large to continue accelerating long after the others have stopped.

2024 Yamaha Sidewinder L-TX GT EPS Handling

The layout of the SRV chassis was engineered with the aim of concentrating the mass. About 60 percent of the sled’s weight is centered within the main triangulation. The result is a sled with quick and balanced handling that is fun to play in various conditions.

The SRV chassis combines a load-bearing triangular structure with a lightweight aluminum construction to create a neutrally balanced sled-centered rider. The pyramid-shaped upper frame establishes the strength of the chassis without excessive weight.
